Congress of Racial Equality Founded in Chicago

James Farmer, Bernice Fisher, and University of Chicago students founded CORE in 1942, applying Gandhian nonviolent direct action to American racial segregation. In 1943 they staged the first American sit-in at Jack Spratt Coffee House in Chicago, testing the tactics that would define the 1960s movement.
