Danville Massacre 1883: Four Black Men Killed on Election Eve
On the eve of Virginia elections, white Democrats opened fire on Black residents in Danville, killing four Black men and wounding others. The attack was designed to suppress Black Republican turnout. Democrats used the violence to incite white voters statewide; they swept the election the following day, ending Readjuster biracial coalition government in Virginia.
