Equal Employment Opportunity Act Gives EEOC Authority to Sue Employers

Congress passed the Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972, granting the EEOC authority to file lawsuits against private employers for the first time. The Act also extended Title VII coverage to state and local governments and educational institutions.
