Elk v. Wilkins 1884: Native Americans Denied Citizenship

Supreme Court ruled that John Elk, a Native American who had left his tribe and assimilated into white society, was not a U.S. citizen under the 14th Amendment. The Court held that Native Americans born into tribal allegiance could not become citizens without an act of Congress, extending second-class status across racial lines.
