Equal Credit Opportunity Act Prohibits Credit Discrimination by Race

Congress enacted the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, prohibiting creditors from discriminating on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, or age. The Act gave Black Americans a federal legal tool to challenge racially discriminatory lending practices, though enforcement remained weak and structural lending discrimination persisted in Black communities.
