Equal Employment Opportunity Act Gives EEOC Litigation Authority

Congress passed the Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972, granting the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission authority to file lawsuits directly against private employers for the first time. The Act also extended Title VII coverage to state and local governments and educational institutions, significantly expanding enforcement of employment discrimination law.
