Essence Magazine Launches as First Major Publication for Black Women

Essence magazine launched in May 1970, the first major national magazine targeting Black women. Founded by Edward Lewis, Clarence Smith, Cecil Hollingsworth, and Jonathan Blount, the magazine addressed fashion, politics, relationships, and culture from a Black women's perspective, reaching hundreds of thousands of readers within its first years.
