Fannie Lou Hamer went to a Sunflower County, Mississippi hospital for the removal of a small uterine tumor and was given a hysterectomy without her knowledge or consent — a practice so common in Mississippi it was called a 'Mississippi appendectomy.' She became a leading civil rights voice despite this violation.
