North Carolina Eugenics Program Disproportionately Sterilizes Black Women
North Carolina's Eugenics Board, operating under a 1929 law, continued sterilizing poor and Black women through the 1970s. Of the approximately 7,600 people sterilized in North Carolina's program, over 65% were Black despite comprising less than 25% of the population. Minors and welfare recipients faced pressure or coercion. The board was not abolished until 1977.
