Freedmen's Bureau Closes, Removing Last Federal Safety Net
Congress allowed the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands to close in 1872, ending federal oversight of labor contracts and education for formerly enslaved people. The Bureau had been the main institution preventing ex-Confederates from reimposing near-slavery conditions. Its closure preceded the 1877 troop withdrawal, removing a critical layer of protection.
