Freedpeople Organize Formal Petition Campaigns for Land and Rights

Freedpeople organized formal Congressional petition campaigns from 1865 onward, asserting citizenship rights. The Edisto Island petition of October 1865 demanded land rights against Johnson's restoration orders. Freedpeople in Virginia, Georgia, and elsewhere petitioned for military protection, land access, and voting rights. These documents, preserved in Bureau and Congressional records, show Black political agency from the earliest days of emancipation.
