Grant Elected on Black Votes, Then Slowly Retreats from Protection
Grant won the 1868 election with ~500,000 Black votes in Southern states decisive to his margin — he won the popular vote by only ~300,000. His administration initially prosecuted the Klan vigorously. But under Liberal Republican pressure, Northern fatigue, and economic depression after 1873, federal protection of Black rights systematically weakened throughout his two terms.
