Henry McNeal Turner Leads Black Mobilization in Georgia

Rev. Henry McNeal Turner, AME bishop and Union Army chaplain, was central to Georgia Reconstruction politics — registering voters, organizing Union League chapters, and serving in Georgia's Reconstruction legislature. When Georgia expelled all 27 Black legislators in September 1868, Turner delivered a devastating floor speech on the expulsion before Congress ordered Georgia's return to military rule.
