LAPD Operation HAMMER Arrests 1,453 in South LA in One Weekend
LAPD Chief Daryl Gates launches Operation HAMMER, sweeping South Los Angeles and arresting 1,453 people — mostly young Black men — in a single weekend. Most are released without charges. The operation, presented as anti-gang, is widely condemned as mass detention of Black youth. The ACLU documents systematic Fourth Amendment violations.
