Supreme Court Bars Cross-District Busing in Detroit, Cementing School Segregation

In Milliken v. Bradley, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that federal courts could not order busing across school district boundaries unless suburban districts had intentionally participated in segregation. The ruling, authored by Chief Justice Burger, ended Detroit's integration plan and effectively protected white suburban enclaves from desegregation orders, cementing metropolitan school segregation.
