Mississippi Secession Declaration Explicitly Cites Slavery
Mississippi's Declaration of Secession opened: "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery — the greatest material interest of the world." It explicitly listed slavery's economic and racial rationale. South Carolina, Georgia, and Texas issued similar declarations. The Confederate Constitution (Article I, Section 9) explicitly protected slavery in any new Confederate territory, leaving no ambiguity about the war's cause.
