Supreme Court Rules Missouri Must Admit Gaines to Law School

In Missouri ex rel. Gaines v. Canada, the Supreme Court ruled 6-2 that Missouri must either admit Lloyd Gaines to its whites-only law school or build an equal Black law school in-state. It was the first NAACP legal strategy victory under Charles Hamilton Houston, chipping the first crack in Plessy's 'separate but equal' doctrine.
