NAACP Boycott of South Carolina Continues Over Confederate Flag on State Capitol
The NAACP launched an economic boycott of South Carolina in 2000 to pressure the state to remove the Confederate battle flag from atop the State House. The boycott estimated to cost $25 million annually in lost tourism and convention business. South Carolina moved the flag to a Confederate soldier monument in front of the Capitol in July 2000 — a partial concession the NAACP deemed insufficient. The boycott continued through the decade.
