Johannes Mehserle Conviction for Oscar Grant Killing: First California Officer Convicted for On-Duty Shooting

On July 8, 2010, BART officer Johannes Mehserle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the New Year's Day 2009 killing of Oscar Grant, 22, who was shot in the back while lying face-down, handcuffed, on the Fruitvale BART platform in Oakland. The killing was filmed by multiple bystanders. Mehserle claimed he confused his gun for a Taser. He was sentenced to 2 years and served 11 months. It was the first time a California law enforcement officer was convicted for an on-duty shooting. Grant's story was depicted in the 2013 film Fruitvale Station. His death is considered a precursor to the BLM movement.
