Portuguese Capture First Enslaved Africans for Atlantic Trade

Portuguese captain Antão Gonçalves seized approximately twelve Africans from the coast of Mauritania and brought them to Lisbon, initiating the Atlantic slave trade. This marked the first documented abduction of Africans for enslavement in Europe in the modern Atlantic era, establishing a model of violent seizure that would define the trade for four centuries.
