Virginia Readjuster Movement: Biracial Governance Ended by Terror

The Readjuster Party under Mahone governed since 1879 with biracial support: Black men appointed to state offices, Black schools funded, poll tax abolished. At peak it sent Mahone to the Senate. The 1883 Democratic campaign of racial terror and the Danville Massacre destroy the only successful biracial governing coalition in post-Reconstruction Virginia.
