Selective Service Act Mandates Racially Segregated Military Units

The Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 included a non-discrimination clause but also explicitly prohibited 'mingling of colored and white men in the same regiment.' Black draftees were channeled into segregated units, given fewer combat assignments, and denied access to officers' clubs, hospitals, and blood banks on equal terms.
