Southern Railway Built on Leased Black Convict Labor

The Southern Railway and predecessor lines use leased Black convicts to grade roadbeds and lay track across the Deep South. Convicts work under armed guards for nothing while states collect lease fees. Deaths from disease, accident, and violence are recorded but not prosecuted. The railroad's expansion is directly subsidized by forced Black labor.
