Southern Railway Built on Convict Labor
The Southern Railway and its predecessor lines use leased Black convicts to grade roadbeds, lay track, and build infrastructure across the Deep South. Convicts work in chain gangs under armed guards, paid nothing while states collect lease fees. Deaths from disease, accident, and violence are recorded but not prosecuted. The railroad's expansion is directly subsidized by the forced labor of Black men convicted under pretextual charges.
