Spelman Seminary Founded 1881 for Black Women

Sophia Packard and Harriet Giles founded Spelman Seminary in an Atlanta church basement on April 11, 1881, to provide education for Black women. Enrolling over 800 students by 1890, Spelman became the leading institution of higher education for Black women in America.
