Trayvon Martin, 17, Shot Dead by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida

Trayvon Martin, 17, was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in a Sanford, Florida gated community as Martin walked home from a convenience store. Zimmerman, who had called 911 to report Martin as suspicious, was not initially arrested. After national outcry, he was charged with second-degree murder. His acquittal in July 2013 directly catalyzed the founding of Black Lives Matter.
