Danville Massacre Destroys Virginia's Biracial Readjuster Coalition
The day before Virginia's state elections, white Democrats in Danville attack Black residents, killing four Black men. Democrats use the 'Danville riot' as a pretext, flooding the state with warnings of 'Black domination.' William Mahone's biracial Readjuster Party, which had won Black voting rights, integrated schools, and abolished the poll tax, is swept from power. The Readjuster era ends permanently.
