Black Intellectuals Divide Sharply Over Atlanta Compromise

The Atlanta Compromise immediately divides Black political life. John Hope, future Atlanta University president, publicly rejects Washington's renunciation of political equality. Many others express private alarm. The debate between accommodation and equal rights will define Black political strategy for two decades and culminate in Du Bois's Souls of Black Folk (1903).
