    Congressional Black Caucus founded

    Thirteen Black members of Congress, led by Charles Diggs of Michigan, officially founded the Congressional Black Caucus in 1971 with the declaration 'Black people have no permanent friends, no permanent enemies, just permanent interests.' The CBC became the most powerful institutional voice for Black Americans in the federal government, growing from 13 members to over 50 by the 2020s.
