Her emotional acceptance speech acknowledged the generations of Black actresses who had been denied this recognition and remains one of the most historic moments in Oscar history.

Denzel Washington won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as corrupt detective Alonzo Harris in 'Training Day,' becoming only the second Black man to win the award after Sidney Poitier in 1964. On the same night as Halle Berry's historic win, the dual victories represented an unprecedented moment of Black excellence in Hollywood.
