- March 16, 1827Freedom's Journal Founded as First Black-Owned Newspaper in the US
Samuel Cornish and John Russwurm launched Freedom's Journal in New York City, the first newspaper in the United States owned and operated by Black Americans. Its motto — 'We wish to plead our own cause' — declared editorial independence from white abolitionist papers and gave Black voices direct access to print.

The paper covered African colonization debates, anti-slavery news, Black achievements, and refuted white press slanders. It circulated in 11 states, Washington DC, Canada, Haiti, and England, reaching thousands of free Black readers before ceasing in 1829.
