In the summer of 1957, Thelonious Monk opened an extended residency at the Five Spot Cafe in New York City with a quartet featuring a young John Coltrane, drawing enormous critical attention and cementing Monk's reputation as one of jazz's defining geniuses. The run was instrumental in restoring Monk's New York cabaret card after it had been revoked, allowing him to perform in the city again. The partnership between Monk and Coltrane during this period is considered one of the most important collaborations in jazz history.

Althea Gibson won the Wimbledon singles title on July 6, 1957, becoming the first Black person of either gender to win a Grand Slam tennis championship. She was received by Queen Elizabeth II and later won the US National Championships that same year. Her back-to-back Wimbledon titles in 1957 and 1958 established her as the dominant player in world tennis.

Althea Gibson became the first Black player of either gender to win a Wimbledon singles title, then won the US National Championship later that year. She was named Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press, the first Black athlete so honored.
