During the COVID-19 pandemic, Black renters faced eviction at significantly higher rates than white renters. Princeton Eviction Lab data showed Black renters were filed against at 2–4 times the rate of white renters in major cities during 2020–2021. The CDC eviction moratorium was challenged in courts and ultimately struck down by the Supreme Court in August 2021 (Alabama Association of Realtors v. HHS). An estimated 1.55 million households faced eviction in the month after the moratorium ended. Emergency rental assistance programs reached Black renters at lower rates due to bureaucratic barriers.
